Benches Clear After Home Run Dance Sparks Chaos in NCAA Tournament Game

What began as a celebratory moment in an NCAA baseball game Saturday spiraled into an all-out bench-clearing incident, ejections, and even parents storming the dugouts, after a home run celebration from Samford’s Michael Gupton turned into a theatrical taunt-fest.

In the middle of a high-stakes matchup between the Samford Bulldogs and the Mercer Bears, Gupton launched a towering two-run homer deep into the stands. But instead of simply rounding the bases, Gupton danced, chirped, and gestured his way around the diamond—directing much of it at Mercer shortstop Bradley Frye and the opposing dugout.

From Taunts to Turmoil

Frye didn’t take the mockery lightly. After Gupton’s over-the-top celebration, Frye had to be physically restrained by umpires as he attempted to charge toward the Samford dugout. Chaos soon followed:

  • Players began protesting on the field

  • Fans started shouting from the stands

  • Mercer players in the dugout had to be held back as tensions escalated

The umpires attempted to regain control, ejecting both Gupton and Frye. But things got even more unhinged when Frye’s mother led a group of Mercer fans to confront officials, reportedly storming onto the dugout to protest her son’s ejection.

By the time order was restored nearly 25 minutes later, four people were ejected, including:

  • Samford assistant coach Gil Walkes

  • Mercer pitching coach Tanner Gordon

  • Mercer’s third baseman Brant Baughcum, who was later tossed for shoving a Samford player during a rundown

Samford Takes the W—But Not the Title

Despite the off-the-rails drama, Samford managed to maintain composure long enough to secure a 5–1 victory over Mercer. But their celebration was short-lived. On Sunday, they fell to East Tennessee State 7–5 in the Southern Conference championship.

Conclusion: Passion or Pandemonium?

While emotion is part of the game, this incident is a stark reminder that celebrations can ignite more than just a crowd—they can ignite conflict. In a tournament where everything is on the line, Gupton’s dance may have brought the spotlight, but it nearly sparked a brawl.

Sportsmanship still matters—and on Saturday, it got lost somewhere between third base and the taunt heard around the ballpark.
