Fatal Police Chase Ends in Tragedy: Michigan Youth Advocate Deshawn Leeth Shot After Stealing Cruiser, Attacking Officers

A tragic confrontation on April 4 ended with the death of 30-year-old Deshawn Dante Leeth, a former Michigan inmate turned youth advocate, after a violent and erratic series of events that spanned two states and involved the theft of a police cruiser.

Incident Overview

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash on the Ohio Turnpike at approximately 6:05 p.m. Leeth, the driver involved in the crash, suddenly attacked the responding officer, repeatedly yelling “I’m Jesus, bch!”** as seen in bodycam and dashcam footage released by authorities. Despite being tased, Leeth overpowered the officer, then stole the trooper’s cruiser and fled east toward Pennsylvania.

The incident quickly escalated into a multi-agency pursuit, culminating in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, where Leeth crashed the cruiser. Pennsylvania State Troopers attempted to subdue him, resulting in a violent altercation and Leeth being shot and killed at the scene. Multiple troopers have since been placed on administrative leave, pending an internal review.

Leeth’s Troubled Background and Redemption Arc

Leeth had a history of criminal convictions, including eight home invasions and two larceny charges between 2012 and 2016. He was released from prison in 2023 and had since been working to turn his life around.

Most notably, Leeth founded Underdawg Nation, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting at-risk youth in Washtenaw County, Michigan, providing mentorship and resources for children impacted by violence and instability.

Community Reaction

The news of Leeth’s death stunned many who had come to view him as a rising figure in local advocacy.

Alyshia Dyer, Sheriff of Washtenaw County, shared an emotional tribute on Facebook:

“Words can’t express how heartbroken we are to learn about the sudden and tragic loss of Deshawn Leeth—a true community champion, tireless youth advocate, and courageous soul.”

“His loss will be deeply felt by the young people across our county whose lives he touched… Deshawn showed unwavering compassion and care to everyone he worked with.”

Investigation Underway

The Beaver County District Attorney’s Office is currently reviewing the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting. Authorities have not indicated whether any charges may be filed but emphasized that the case will be handled with full transparency.

Leeth’s final moments—marked by erratic behavior and violence—stand in stark contrast to the life he had been trying to rebuild. His story now leaves behind a complex legacy of redemption, struggle, and an unresolved tragedy that has shocked both law enforcement and the community he once served.
