Authorities have arrested 38-year-old Cody Balmer in connection with the early morning arson attack on the Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence that occurred while Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were asleep inside.
Fire at 2 A.M. While Governor’s Family Slept
The incident unfolded around 2 a.m. Sunday morning when flames erupted at the Governor’s Residence in Harrisburg. Pennsylvania State Police quickly responded and evacuated Governor Shapiro, his wife Lori, and their children. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Governor Shapiro released a statement Sunday morning, expressing gratitude for the swift response by state troopers and firefighters:
“Thank God no one was injured and the fire was extinguished,” Shapiro wrote on X. “Every day, we stand with the law enforcement and first responders who run towards danger to protect our communities. Last night, they did so for our family – and Lori and I are eternally grateful to them for keeping us safe.”
Terrorism and Attempted Murder Charges Filed
At a Sunday evening press conference, Pennsylvania State Police announced that Balmer will be charged with:
- Attempted murder
- Terrorism
- Aggravated arson
- Aggravated assault against an enumerated person
Lt. Col. George Bivens described how Balmer scaled a security fence and deliberately set the fire before escaping the scene. Law enforcement had been searching for Balmer when he allegedly launched the attack.
“He actively evaded troopers who were here to secure the residence,” Bivens said. “While [law enforcement] were searching is when he attacked at the residence, broke in and set the fires.”
Governor Shapiro Condemns Political Violence
Governor Shapiro, speaking at the press conference, denounced the broader rise in political violence across the country.
“This kind of violence is becoming far too common in our society,” Shapiro said. “I don’t give a damn if it’s coming from one particular side or the other… It is not okay and it has to stop.”
As the investigation continues, Pennsylvania State Police are leading the case and have pledged to keep the public informed. The motive for the attack has not yet been disclosed.
