Point of No Return: Zelensky Rejects Putin’s Victory Day Truce, Medvedev Hints at Nuclear Retaliation Over Threats to Moscow Parade

In a move that may go down as one of the most perilous escalations in the Ukraine-Russia conflict to date, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has flatly rejected a proposed three-day ceasefire during Russia’s Victory Day commemorations and issued a chilling warning: he cannot guarantee the safety of world leaders attending Moscow’s May 9th military parade.

With foreign dignitaries expected to join Russian President Vladimir Putin in Red Square to mark the 80th anniversary of the Allied victory over Nazi Germany, this announcement from Kiev has ignited international alarm. Russia’s Deputy Security Council Chairman Dmitry Medvedev did not mince words in his response, issuing what many are calling a thinly veiled nuclear threat.

Zelensky Declines Ceasefire, Dismisses It as “Theatrical”

Putin’s declaration of a May 8–10 ceasefire was reportedly an attempt to create a window for peaceful reflection during Russia’s most sacred national holiday. Yet, Zelensky not only rebuffed the gesture, he publicly questioned its sincerity and used the opportunity to reiterate Ukraine’s determination to carry on hostilities.

“It is impossible to build any plan for the next steps to end the war in two or three days,” Zelensky said at a Saturday press conference. “It just doesn’t look very serious… It’s more of a theatrical production on [Putin’s] part.”

He continued by targeting the foreign attendees expected at the parade:

“No one is going to help Putin play this in order to give him a soft atmosphere of escape from isolation on May 9… We are either at war, or Putin is showing that he is ready for a ceasefire.”

Russia’s Medvedev Responds with Grim Warning

Medvedev’s reaction to Zelensky’s remarks was as fiery as it was ominous. Taking to Telegram, the former Russian president branded Zelensky a “green unshaven asshole” and warned that “no one guarantees May 10 will come in Kiev” if a provocation occurs during the Victory Parade.

“In the event of a real provocation on Victory Day, no one guarantees that May 10 will come in Kiev,” Medvedev posted.

He dismissed the Ukrainian president’s comments as a “verbal provocation” but warned that any real attempt to disrupt Victory Day would provoke a devastating response.

Calculated Gamble or Path to Global Conflict?

Zelensky’s public rejection of the ceasefire—combined with the refusal to ensure the safety of world leaders—raises disturbing questions about Kyiv’s ultimate objectives. Is this a strategic miscalculation, or a deliberate push to provoke Russia into crossing a red line, thereby pulling NATO and the U.S. deeper into the conflict?

Commentators suggest this move is part of a larger desperation strategy, seeking to internationalize the war by provoking a Russian overreaction—especially in the presence of foreign leaders. The idea of a “false flag” or triggered incident during Moscow’s Victory Parade is now being openly discussed in policy circles.

Nuclear Overtones and the Global Stakes

Medvedev’s language—whether bluff or bona fide—has escalated concerns of nuclear retaliation. With Russia’s doctrine allowing for a nuclear response to existential threats, any strike or perceived attack on the capital during a national holiday with high-level foreign guests could be interpreted as a casus belli for all-out escalation.

The messaging from Moscow is clear: Victory Day is sacrosanct. Any attack—physical or symbolic—will not be tolerated.

Zelensky’s Calculated Brinkmanship

Zelensky’s administration has spent the last two years pushing the West to go all-in militarily. From appeals for F-16s and long-range missiles to constant calls for NATO intervention, this rejection of a truce and the veiled threat over Red Square may be the final lever he pulls.

And if the goal is to provoke a global military crisis, Victory Day 2025 may prove to be the spark that sets the world ablaze.
