Victory at the White House: President Trump Honors Navy Midshipmen for Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy Triumph

The Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy capped off their remarkable 2024 football season with a special visit to the White House on Tuesday, celebrating their hard-fought victory in one of college football’s most revered competitions: the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy.

A Season to Remember

Navy’s 10-3 record was impressive on its own, but nothing defined their season more than their victories over traditional rivals — the Air Force Academy and West Point. Those two triumphs secured the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy for the first time since 2019 and earned the Midshipmen a coveted meeting with the President of the United States.

The Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, introduced in 1972, is awarded annually to the winner of the three-way service academy football rivalry. It symbolizes more than athletic achievement — it represents honor, grit, and the timeless inter-service rivalry among America’s future military leaders.

A Hero’s Welcome at the White House

President Donald J. Trump warmly welcomed the team to the White House, where he presented the trophy in a ceremony filled with pride, humor, and reflection.

“At ease. Enjoy yourselves. I’m the boss here,” the President said with a grin, eliciting laughter from the players and staff.

President Trump called on several players to speak, each of whom delivered remarks reflecting humility, gratitude, and devotion to their teammates and mission.

Fullback and co-captain Daba Fofana credited the team’s success to unity and leadership.

“We couldn’t have done it without Coach Brian Newberry, my co-captain Colin Ramos, and everyone buying into the mission. Praise the Lord.”

Quarterback Blake Horvath shared the team’s appreciation:

“It’s an honor to share this stage with President Trump. I speak for the team when I say that.”

When asked if he’d return next year, Horvath confirmed he would lead the team as a firstie (senior).

“Whoa… I am going to be watching,” Trump said with a smile, prompting cheers from the team.

Landon Robinson, the noseguard whose daring fourth-down fake punt led to a touchdown against Army, thanked his teammates and coaches:

“I wouldn’t be here without my teammates and my coaches calling the play. Super thankful and looking forward to the years to come.”

A Tribute to Service and Character

Head Coach Brian Newberry, who guided the Midshipmen to the historic victory, accepted the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy and offered powerful remarks about the character of his team.

“The highest honor and the most tangible goal in our program is to be standing here in the White House with our Commander-in-Chief.”

“In a little over a month, these 23 seniors will graduate and commission as officers in the United States Navy and Marine Corps under your command, Mr. President.”

Newberry concluded his remarks with a salute that echoed across the South Lawn:

“Mr. President, this is your team. America’s team. Go Navy, beat everybody.”

Symbol of Honor and Brotherhood

For the Midshipmen, this ceremony was more than a celebration of football — it was a tribute to their commitment to service and the bond they share as future officers of the United States military. With the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy in hand and the Commander-in-Chief by their side, the 2024 Navy football team secured its place in both academy and American sports history.
