House Democrats Denied Access to MS-13 Gang Member in El Salvador After Comer Blocks Taxpayer-Funded “Liberation” Trip

Four House Democrats — Reps. Robert Garcia (CA), Maxwell Frost (FL), Yassamin Ansari (AZ), and Maxine Dexter (OR) — flew to El Salvador this week in an attempt to visit Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an illegal alien, domestic abuser, and alleged MS-13 gang member held at the notorious CECOT prison.
Inspired by Democrat Senator Chris Van Hollen, who himself used taxpayer funds for a similar trip, the four House Democrats were hoping to meet with Abrego Garcia in what many critics have called a political stunt aimed at rehabilitating a known violent criminal.
But their plans fell apart — fast.
Comer Throws Cold Water on the “Gang Member Rescue Mission”
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) denied the Democrats’ request for a taxpayer-funded CODEL (congressional delegation), stating they were not acting in official capacity and calling the entire mission “absurd.”
“You may be pleased to know that Democrat Senator Chris Van Hollen was photographed just yesterday in El Salvador enjoying margaritas garnished with cherry slices with the foreign gang member your letter references,” Comer wrote in a blistering rejection letter.
“If you also wish to meet with him, you can spend your own money. But I will not approve a single dime of taxpayer funds for use on the excursion you have requested.”
Denied at the Gate: El Salvador Blocks Visit
Upon arriving in El Salvador, the Democrats were turned away by local authorities.
Congressman Maxwell Frost publicly complained to reporters outside the U.S. embassy, admitting their request to see Abrego Garcia had been denied.
“We got word at the embassy that our request has been denied by the government here locally because they say we are not here on official capacity,” Frost whined.
He then pivoted to attacking Chairman Comer for blocking their official access.
The Facts About Kilmar Abrego Garcia
- Illegally resided in Maryland for over a decade
- Arrested in 2019 with drugs, cash, and gang-affiliated clothing
- Linked to MS-13 by DHS and immigration courts
- Ordered deported by an immigration judge and appellate court
- Wife filed a 2021 protection order for domestic violence
- Caught transporting 8 undocumented migrants in a suspected trafficking operation
This is the man that House Democrats are burning political capital (and frequent flyer miles) to meet with.
Comer: “Enough is Enough”
Comer summed up the situation perfectly:
“It is absurd that you both displayed active hostility for over two years toward the Committee’s oversight of the Biden Border Crisis… yet now, you are seeking travel at Committee expense to meet with foreign gang members.”
Instead of focusing on border security, crime victims, or U.S. families impacted by illegal alien violence, these Democrats chose to prioritize a PR trip for a convicted gang-affiliated illegal.
And when the trip collapsed in embarrassment, they lashed out — proving once again: the Left is more committed to protecting foreign criminals than defending the American people.
Taxpayers aren’t footing the bill for it anymore.
