Egg Prices Plummet as Trump Admin Cracks Down on Inflation and Food Cartels

A Historic Drop Reflects a Sharp Pivot in Economic Management

In a dramatic turn for American consumers, U.S. egg prices plunged by 12.7% in April, marking the steepest one-month decline in over 40 years. According to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) data released Tuesday, the average cost for a dozen Grade A eggs dropped to $5.12, down from March’s record high of $6.23.

The nosedive in prices comes just months after President Donald J. Trump returned to office, with his administration aggressively targeting inflation, corporate collusion, and supply chain instability—key issues that plagued the Biden years.

From $1.47 to $4.15: Biden’s Inflation Legacy

When Joe Biden took office in January 2021, a dozen eggs cost Americans an average of $1.47. By December 2024, that number had skyrocketed to $4.15—a nearly 200% increase that sent shockwaves through household grocery budgets nationwide.

The Biden administration blamed the spike on avian flu outbreaks and global supply chain disruptions. But critics argue that reckless monetary policies, overspending, and regulatory chokeholds under Biden drove inflation to historic levels and gutted middle-class purchasing power.

Trump Takes Action: DOJ Investigations and Farm Security Overhaul

By contrast, Trump’s return to the Oval Office in 2025 has already brought major shifts. In February, the U.S. Department of Agriculture under Trump announced a $1 billion investment in farm-level biosecurity, aiming to prevent future avian flu outbreaks and ensure stable poultry production.

Simultaneously, the Trump Department of Justice launched investigations into price-fixing and market manipulation by major egg producers, who allegedly exploited flu-related shortages to hike prices beyond reasonable market conditions.

“We’re not going to let food giants gouge the American people,” President Trump said during a press briefing in March. “We’ll break up the cartels and bring prices back down. That’s what we’re doing now.”

CPI Breakdown: Eggs Lead the Grocery Deflation

Eggs weren’t the only category to see a decline. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics:

  • The meats, poultry, fish, and eggs index fell 1.6% in April.
  • Fruits and vegetables dropped 0.4%.
  • Cereals and bakery products declined 0.5%.

Of the six major grocery categories, five posted decreases—signaling a broader trend of stabilization in food prices after years of volatility.

Yet the year-over-year numbers still reflect the damage done:

  • The eggs index is still up 49.3% compared to April 2024.
  • The broader meats, poultry, fish, and eggs category rose 7.0% year-over-year.

These lingering effects are a sobering reminder of how deeply the previous administration’s failures cut into household finances.

American Families Still Digging Out

Even with April’s price relief, the economic scars left by Biden-era inflation run deep. A dozen eggs today costs nearly four times what it did during Trump’s first term, when prices hovered around $1.32.

With wages struggling to keep pace with inflation, many families have had to choose between groceries and gas, savings and survival. For them, April’s egg price drop is not just a statistical anomaly—it’s a breath of relief.

Trump’s Economic Strategy: Accountability and Sovereignty

The Trump administration’s strategy is two-fold: rein in abusive corporate pricing through federal investigations and restore sovereignty to America’s food supply chain through investment and deregulation.

“We’re taking our economy back from the globalists and special interests,” Trump said. “America will be affordable again, one aisle at a time.”

With more actions expected in the coming months—from antitrust probes to tariffs aimed at foreign agricultural dumping—the administration has made clear that the era of runaway grocery inflation is over.

Eggs, it seems, are just the beginning.
