Gavin Newsom Panics as Trump Signals Support for His Arrest Over LA Insurrection Chaos

California Governor Gavin Newsom is now playing the victim card after President Trump publicly stated that, if he were Border Czar Tom Homan, he would arrest the Governor for aiding and abetting violent illegal alien rioters in Los Angeles.

Trump’s blunt assessment on Monday followed three straight nights of chaos in LA, where anti-ICE mobs launched explosives at a federal detention facility, attacked mounted police, and torched property—all while Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass stood down.

“He’s grossly incompetent,” Trump said, citing Newsom’s failure to contain the riots and pointing to the billions wasted on California’s still-unfinished high-speed rail project.
“The people that are causing the problem are professional agitators, they’re insurrectionists… They should be in jail.”

Newsom: “This is a line we cannot cross”

Predictably, Newsom ran to X (formerly Twitter) to cry foul:

“The President of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting Governor,” he wrote. “This is a day I hoped I would never see in America.”

“I don’t care if you’re a Democrat or a Republican, this is a line we cannot cross as a nation — this is an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism.”

Newsom’s posturing comes just days after he dared Homan to arrest him, mocking him as a “tough guy” at an LAPD press conference. But now that President Trump has responded with unflinching support for legal accountability, Newsom is backpedaling—hard.

Trump: Enough Is Enough

President Trump’s message was clear: leaders who protect violent foreign nationals and obstruct federal enforcement should not be immune from consequences. His remarks align with Homan’s statement earlier this week that “no one is above the law,” especially when actively harboring illegal aliens or inciting attacks on federal officers.

Newsom’s Lawsuit: More Deflection

In a further attempt to shift focus, Newsom has now filed a lawsuit against President Trump, claiming that the federalization of the National Guard and ICE operations constitute an “overreach.”

But critics say Newsom’s desperation is showing. Rather than addressing how LA fell into lawless anarchy on his watch, he’s lashing out at the only administration actually working to restore order.

Final Thoughts: Accountability Is Not Authoritarianism

Gavin Newsom’s sudden concern for “democratic norms” rings hollow after three days of open insurrection under his nose. The facts are clear:

  • He refused to act while ICE agents were attacked.

  • He mocked federal law enforcement.

  • He sued the president rather than restore order.

  • And now he’s crying authoritarianism after Trump finally called him out.
