The AARO, launched in 2022 by the Department of Defense, was tasked with untangling the chaos of UFO reports and extraterrestrial claims. One of the most famous UFO hotspots in the world, Area 51 in Nevada, wasn’t the home of interstellar beings — it was the testing ground for the F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter, and the government wanted to keep it that way.
In the 1980s, the Air Force sent one of its own to fan the flames of alien lore. According to AARO’s findings, an Air Force colonel handed fabricated photos of “flying saucers” to a bar owner near Area 51. It was all part of a psychological operations campaign to stoke public obsession with aliens — and bury the truth in a haze of fiction.
A Culture of Misdirection Inside the Military
Former AARO director Sean Kirkpatrick described a culture where deception was internalized. Air Force officers were subjected to bizarre briefings about a fictional unit dubbed “Yankee Blue,” allegedly investigating extraterrestrial tech. Recruits were told never to speak of these “alien briefings,” many believing they were genuine, never knowing they were being manipulated.
This was psychological warfare — not against foreign enemies, but against the American people and even the military’s own ranks.
The Robert Salas Incident: Alien Encounter or EMP Test?
One of the most chilling alleged UFO encounters involved Air Force Captain Robert Salas, who in 1967 claimed a UFO hovered over a nuclear missile base in Montana, disabling all missiles and cutting power. For years, Salas insisted extraterrestrials were intervening in the Cold War.
But AARO’s investigation uncovered a different explanation: the “UFO” was part of a top-secret electromagnetic pulse (EMP) test — to see how well U.S. silos could withstand nuclear conditions. Salas, unaware of the classified program, became a lifelong believer in an event the government refused to clarify — until now.
A Pattern of Lies and Lost Trust
This calculated manipulation, AARO concludes, reveals a longstanding Pentagon pattern of weaponizing the UFO phenomenon to mislead the public, obscure cutting-edge defense research, and even misdirect foreign intelligence services.
Sean Kirkpatrick’s conclusion is sobering: “The government has, by design, misled its own people whenever secret programs risked exposure.”

Interestingly, these revelations align with SpaceX founder Elon Musk’s repeated assertions that UFOs are not visitors from the stars, but products of highly classified Earth-bound military operations. Musk has maintained that in all his aerospace endeavors, he has never encountered any evidence of alien life.
