Macron Meddles Again: Lectures Trump, Slams Putin, and Targets Greenland in Global Power Grab

Unpopular French President Emmanuel Macron, whose approval has cratered with 82% of French citizens viewing him as a failure, is once again inserting himself into international affairs—this time to contradict President Donald Trump and cast shade on Russian diplomacy.

While his own country reels from protests, economic discontent, and political instability, Macron jetted off to Greenland on June 15 to make bold statements on matters far beyond his jurisdiction.

Speaking during a press conference alongside Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Macron took aim at both Russia and Trump.

He dismissed Trump’s openness to allowing Vladimir Putin to mediate between Israel and Iran, claiming Russia “lacks the credibility” to do so due to its involvement in Ukraine and disregard for the UN Charter.

“I do not believe that Russia, which is now engaged in a high-intensity conflict and has decided not to respect the UN Charter for several years now, can be a mediator,” Macron declared.

This comes despite Trump not seeking Macron’s opinion on the matter. The French leader also made a point to say that France had no role in Israel’s recent strikes on Iran, distancing himself from escalating tensions while still inserting France into the conversation.

But Macron’s mission wasn’t limited to Iran-Israel relations.

Greenland—a semi-autonomous Danish territory—is the latest stage for Macron’s global ambitions. In what appeared to be a clear jab at Trump’s past interest in purchasing the island, Macron asserted that Greenland was under threat from “predatory ambition.”

“Greenland is not to be sold, not to be taken,” Macron said, while touting a vision of European unity and cooperation over American expansionism. “This is a wakeup call for all Europeans.”

Denmark, which had traditionally been a U.S. arms buyer, has now pivoted towards France, placing orders for French-made surface-to-air missiles. The move reflects growing coordination between Paris and Copenhagen, potentially at Washington’s expense.

Though Macron insists on “cooperation, not confrontation,” his trip underscores a recurring theme in his presidency: talking down to allies, meddling in global power struggles, and failing to manage his own house while trying to manage everyone else’s.

As Macron prepares to speak with Trump at the upcoming G7 summit, the real question remains: does anyone still take Macron seriously—outside of the EU bubble?
