Romania’s Political Earthquake: Right-Wing Nationalist George Simion Surges Ahead in Presidential Showdown

The winds of nationalism are sweeping through Eastern Europe once again — and this time, they’ve blown straight through Bucharest.

In a stunning rebuke of the European Union’s globalist agenda and endless Ukraine funding, George Simion — the firebrand leader of Romania’s nationalist AUR party — dominated the first round of Romania’s presidential “redo” election, securing 41% of the national vote.

This sets him up for a decisive face-off on May 18 against Europhile technocrat and liberal Mayor of Bucharest, Nicusor Dan, who narrowly clinched second place with just under 21%.

An Earthquake with MAGA Vibes

Simion, who is openly inspired by Donald Trump and the America First movement, has campaigned against mass migration, EU overreach, and Romania’s involvement in the Ukraine war.

“This election is not about one candidate or another, but about every Romanian who has been lied to, ignored, humiliated, and still has the strength to believe and defend our identity and rights,” Simion declared on X following the victory.

His victory is already sending panic signals through Brussels, as another EU state appears to be pivoting toward a populist realignment reminiscent of Hungary, Slovakia, and Italy.

Diaspora Uprising

Romania’s working class diaspora played a crucial role, delivering overwhelming margins for Simion across Europe — with over 70% of votes cast for him in Italy, Spain, and Germany. Many of these voters had previously backed Calin Georgescu in the annulled December 2024 election — a contest that was controversially tossed out under accusations of “Russian interference” and “campaign fraud” that were never substantiated.

This time, Simion and Georgescu stood united, even voting together — a clear message of nationalist solidarity.

EU Panic and Populist Celebration

Right-wing leaders across Europe hailed Simion’s win as a major victory against the bureaucratic elite in Brussels.

“Congratulations to George Simion… on the excellent result! Wishing you the best of luck in the second round,” tweeted Mateusz Morawiecki, former Polish PM and current ECR leader.

“In Romania the people finally voted, freely, with their heads and hearts… With all due respect to the ‘gentlemen’ of Brussels and their dirty tricks. Bravo George Simion!” said Italy’s Matteo Salvini.

Simion’s rise threatens to realign Romania with Hungary’s Viktor Orbán and Slovakia’s Robert Fico — creating a powerful axis of conservative resistance to EU federalism, open borders, and foreign entanglements.

The Road Ahead: May 18 Runoff

All eyes are now on the May 18 runoff. With nearly double the support of his liberal opponent, Simion enters the final stretch as the clear favorite — but the liberal establishment and foreign interests will stop at nothing to protect their hold on power.

Whether the Romanian people can finish the political revolution they started may soon be the defining moment for Europe’s nationalist wave in 2025.
